Lightweight Roof Tiles For So Many Reasons

By admin | January 30, 2010

When considering environmental friendly products, the tendency is to think in terms of how much waste is generated by the production and use of the product.  That is part of it, but going green goes much deeper than that. A great product to demonstrate the difference and to show on just how many levels the environment can be affected is lightweight roof tiles.  In 1977, a company founded in the UK and Ireland released the first in this type roofing system.  This particular system reduces the necessity for replacement because of the durability and the amount of timbers used.  It also has a lower impact on CO2 emissions and uses less fuel in delivery.  The reason for this is the weight.  One truckload of this roofing will successfully complete a job that would take eight truckloads of slate, concrete or clay tiles.

Not only environment friendly, also police preferred, the lightweight roof tiles have been awarded the Security by Design status.  This is an internationally recognized status for products that discourage crime and the fear of crime.  This roofing system will decrease the vulnerability of a roof for entry to criminals.  It is also more resilient to weather and vandalism.  These particular tiles, constructed of lightweight steel, weigh one eighth of what slate, clay, or cement tiles do.  This plays a very large role in installation.  Because of the light weight, contractors are able to better handle them, a big advantage when considering the height some of the jobs require.

Installation goes very smoothly thanks to a unique fixing method that allows larger areas to be covered quickly.  The method also allows for installation on steep pitched roofs.  Due to the strength of the material, contractors can feel confident it will support their weight during installation.

Durability, strength, environmentally friendly, crime prevention, weather and vandalism resilient, easy installation, safe installation, reduced labor, less cost in fuel for delivery - reasons enough for this choice.  What about aesthetics though?  A favorite in these lightweight roof tiles seem to be the gray, which very closely resemble slate tiles in appearance.  Therefore, it’s possible to get a traditional look combined with convenience of modern day technology.
