Lesson in life from a funeral

By admin | January 13, 2010

Sometimes in life we forget to take the good with the bad. We get so caught up in the bad things that we fail to see how they might actually be good for us. Granted, this is harder with very sad things like funerals, but it’s not impossible. We can find the happy things even in funerals.

Allow me to share an example from my own experience. I have been to many funerals because I am 74 years old. In the course of my life, I’ve seen tragedy and triumph, happiness and despair. But I’ve learned that we can usually make the best of funerals by remembering the good things about the person’s life.

For example, about five years ago I had a nephew who passed on. He was only 30 years old in the prime of his life, so it was quite the tragedy. His funeral programs said that he was living the life of his dreams, vacationing in Bali once a month, and running his Internet company for the rest of the month. He had a Russian supermodel for a wife, and three cute boys who dressed in bow ties and cardigans for  family pictures. It was the dream life.

Then it was taken away from him. But as I stood there reading his funeral program, I remembered that he had lived life to the fullest. He has taken life by the horns and rode it like a bull. And I think he must have something to do on the other side that will allow him to continue in his good works.
