How to Choose the Lowest Renters Insurance

By admin | February 1, 2010

The home or apartment that is being rented out is usually covered by its own insurance. A tenant’s property is an altogether different thing. In the event of burglary, vandalism, storm damage, etc, a landlord does not cover a renter’s personal property. If the residence in which a tenant is lives is being repaired, renters insurance can cover the cost of rent at another residence being occupied while repairs are completed. Renters should consider visitors or guests, as liability can be a factor in the event of injury in your residence. There are many building owners that expect their renters to purchase insurance when a lease is being signed. To get the lowest renters insurance, a tenant should know what is to be covered.

A renter should first make a detailed list of what items they own. A toy collection, furniture, kitchen appliances, book and video games don’t seem like much when being purchased, but if damaged, the costs are quite expensive to replace the items. Specialty items such as jewelry and coin collections should also be noted. Coverage for items is based on replacement costs or actual cash value. Replacement costs means damaged items are replaced for the full price paid at time of purchase. This will add a small increase to premium costs. Actual cash value is based on what the items are worth at time of incident, which includes depreciation. Weighing one policy’s term over the other in ideas of costs can determine which policy is chosen.

The deductible price could also be a factor in what policy is chosen. The larger the deductible a renter is willing to pay, the lower the premium. If a tenant is willing to offset premium costs in favor of a larger deductible, this is a great way to obtain the lowest renters insurance. Discounts are also a factor in obtaining the lowest renters insurance price. Whether the renter has an alarm system for fire or burglary, a working sprinkler system, secure deadbolt locks on doors and other security items can also lower renters insurance costs. Policy seekers may want to determine if a discount is available if the renters insurance is bundles with existing car insurance.

Renters insurance does not cover floor damage or earthquake damage, but it covers a host of other valuable items, many used everyday. In the event of damage, those items carry worth and should be covered as such.
