Time outs are like the be-all end-all type of discipline for kids nowadays. I know that when I first became a parent, every parenting class I attended or book I read told me that if you use time outs, all your problems as a parent are solved. I was told that when I put my child in time out, they would sit there and think about their offense, and come to the realization that they were wrong and would be contrite and apologetic. But I found this wasn’t the case. For some reason, certain ones of my adopted children would not respond in that way at all. In fact they would be more belligerent than ever when I let them out of time out. Now don’t get me wrong, I think time outs work great for certain kids, just not all of them.
So what kinds of kids don’t respond well to time outs? A couple of types are kids with oppositional defiant disorder and reactive attachment disorder. These guys have to be in control of every situation, or else they don’t feel safe. Problem is, a lot of the time they can’t be in control because they don’t know how to solve a problem that they’re facing. Which leads them to acting out, violence, defiant actions, talking back, and so forth. This is not acceptable, and as a parent we need to teach them the problem solving skills to do this.
