Three Best Man Speech Pitfalls and How to Avoid Them
By admin | July 22, 2010
One of the biggest pitfalls guys encounter in giving their best man speeches is that they simply are not prepared. But with a little planning and preparation you can actually do a lot better. If you are worried thinking that you are not a great writer and you are simply scared of public speaking, then let me assure you that you are not alone. The majority of the best men, or as a matter of fact most of us, have those problems. The success of your best man speech will depend on how badly you want to get over the problem more than anything else. Here are some tips to get your started and in the right way.
Don’t be the guy who stands up, sips water five times, stutters, loses track of thoughts, then just shouts out ‘Cheers’ to the bride and groom. A couple weeks before the wedding (at least) start mapping out what you want to say. By wedding day you should be well rehearsed, or at the very least know exactly what points you want to cover. Another common pitfall related to best man speeches is having a speech that is way to long. A good guideline for speech length is five to ten minutes. Stand in front of a mirror and practice enough times to make sure that your speech is not one that will put people to sleep. Don’t be afraid to cut out a couple stories if it is in the interest of having a concise speech!
Finally, avoid overly-embarrassing stories that will change the tome of the wedding. You do not want the bride giving dirty looks to the groom after you talk about a party you once attended, and you do not want anyone in attendance on this big day feeling bad about themselves because of something you said in your speech! So, those are the few best man speech pitfalls you should take care of.
