Best Man Speech

By admin | May 30, 2010

A wedding is one of the most important days in the life of any couple.  Being asked to be an attendant is a great honor for a friend or family member.  Of course, this person wants to make sure they do everything right and wants to make sure the couple’s special day goes exactly as promised.

Giving the best man speech is a great honor.  This can make it very stressful for the person who is picked to give the speech.   Not only does the best man want to make sure that the groom (and couple) appreciates it, but it requires the best man to make a speech in front of a large group of people.  This makes it even more important for the speech to be well thought out.  It must be entertaining, engaging, and hopefully includes things of special meaning for the groom.

Although there are several books and manuals on the subject, there is no rules for exactly what the best man should do or say.  Additionally, there is a good chance that the best man may have not had to make very many speeches in front of a group before.  Perhaps one of the most useful things is a sample best man speech.  This gives the best man an idea of what to say, as well as helping a best man whose strong point may not be writing or giving speeches.

Many weddings are very formal, and the best man may not be sure of exactly how the event is structured.  Generally, at  the reception, the father of the bride gives a speech.  The person who introduces him is generally the best man.  The groom will then give a responsive speech, followed by the maid of honor, and the speeches will conclude with the best man giving the closing speech.  The best man will also be responsible for speaking for anybody who could not make it to the wedding.  Being well prepared will help make the day go smoothly, as well as greatly reducing  the stress on the best man.     Some common sense things, such as not drinking too much and having a little bit to eat about 30 minutes before the speech, will make the moment of giving the speech more comfortable.
